About the store
The Spinning Turtle is in the Historic Arts
District in Nelsonville, just off US 33. It is the only full service Local
Yarn Shop in South East Ohio. It is located in the historic former Masonic
Lodge building and has the pressed tin roof typical of many of the shops on
the square. The square is also the location of Stuart’s Opera House, many
interesting Art Galleries, Specialty shops,
including a quilt shop, and antique shops. The Athens
County Military Museum is also located nearby. It is within walking
distance of the Rocky
Boots Outlet shop and Hocking Valley Scenic
Railroad, as well as an easy drive to many other find attractions in both
Athens and Hocking Counties. One close to my heart, as a former
historic recreationist is the Robbins
Crossing Living History Museum at Hocking College. Just 20 minutes away is the Dairy Barn, home in alternating years to
Quilt National and Bead National.
Nearly is also the Kennedy Museum, both near Ohio University.
Places to eat: the Rhapsody Restaurant
(run by the culinary arts degree Program at Hocking college, Mama Renee’s
Pizza and subs, right next door, Fullbrooks Café,
the Mine Tavern, the Gelato Shop and more.
The
shop also participates in Final
Fridays on the Square, where the last Friday of the Month, the 20+ galleries
and shops stay open to 10 pm, special openings
and demonstrations are arranged, special events take place, music and craft
booths are set around the central fountain and the square is blocked off to
traffic. Contact the shop for this
month’s special demonstration.

Owner Marti Dolata is a longtime practitioner of knitting, crochet,
embroidery, felting, spinning, weaving and historic costuming (emphasis on
Renaissance and Civil War) and enjoys drama and folk music. She was the
founder and director for seven years of the Local Yokels, a living history
village at the Arizona Renaissance Festival.
She was, and sometimes still is, involved in living history since the
1970’s. She has also been a
volunteer firefighter with Ames Township, and now works
with J-Vac in Wellston, a sheltered workshop of
Mentally Retarded, Disabled Adults. She really enjoys teaching, and looks
forward to one-on-one classes, the fiber club and just gossiping about fiber
and telling stories.
